Overview:

In the race to the top for best accounting software, QuickBooks has taken the lead for years, running laps around its competitors—that is, until now. Quickbooks has finally found its match in Xero, an accounting solution based out of New Zealand. While not quite yet able to match QuickBooks in terms of functionality, Xero is a formidable opponent; it truly is “beautiful accounting software” (the company’s motto).

Xero was founded in 2006 by Hamish Edwards and (current CEO) Rod Drury. After only 10 years, this Kiwi company has established offices worldwide (in New Zealand, Australia, the UK, Singapore, and the US) and attracted 700,000 users in over 180 countries. It is the primary accounting solution for over 16,000 accounting firms. Xero has even been named the Forbes #1 Innovative Growth Company. Twice.

In general, this software is well loved by its many users. It boasts impressive contact management and inventory features as well as robust payroll capabilities and many automatization time-savers. And to top it all off, Xero supports unlimited users and incredibly advanced user permissions. Largely thanks to these features, Xero is quickly closing the gap in the race against QuickBooks. However, the software is not quite up to speed in a few areas.
